Estimated Modern Use (EMU)

Training Module

Welcome and Instructions

Welcome to the Estimated Modern Use (EMU) training module. This module covers both the EMU as an indicator, and the Service Statistics to EMU (SS to EMU) tool used to generate the EMU. By moving through the module, you will learn:

  • What is the EMU and why was it developed?
  • How do I use the SS to EMU tool?
  • How does the EMU contribute to national estimates of contraceptive use?
  • How do I interpret and use the tool results?

How to work through the module

The module includes a variety of training materials, including PowerPoint presentations with detailed speaker's notes, tools, and guidance resources that can be accessed on your own schedule. These materials can be used by individual learners to self-teach the material, or by educators to create a curriculum around the EMU and the use of routine service statistics to monitor family planning programs.

Training materials relevant to each topic appear at the bottom of each page. Review these materials in order before progressing to the next page. Be sure to view the PowerPoint presentation in a format that allows you to see the speaker notes, as they contain a lot of additional detail.

You can move to the next topic by clicking on the “next” button at the bottom of the page or using the navigation list on the left.

Once you have completed the module and want to jump to a particular resource, you can find all included materials listed on the All Training Resources page.

Any new resources related to EMU or updated versions of Track20's SS to EMU tool will be posted to the SS to EMU Tool page. To learn more about Track20, visit http://www.track20.org. Click here to learn about other Track20 tools.

To start your training, continue to What is EMU where you can begin to move through the topics in order.
